About Me

My name is Alice Wang. I was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada when I was 14. I have been living in Toronto, Ontario for the last 12 years. Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated by general science. Inspired to be a scientist, I studied sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) in high school and later enrolled in the Human Biology: Genes, Genetics, and Biotechnology program at the University of Toronto. I received a Hon. B.Sc. degree from U of T in 2005, when I decided to polish my laboratory skills by applying for the Biotechnology Technologist program at Centennial College. I graduated with an advanced diploma from the Biotechnology Technologist program at Centennial College in 2008. I am motivated about my career in the biotechnology industry.

Besides the interest in science, I am also passionate about environmental issues. While global warming is becoming an important concern, more and more scientists devote their research to grapple with the problem. I keep myself updated on the latest developments. I am also interested in art, literature, movies, music, and technology. I spend my spare time immersing myself in these areas of interests.

This blog started as an ambitious plan to keep an record of all what I have learned. Writing is another passion of mine. And I hope that starting a blog would keep me motivated to keep on learning!

    Dear Miss WANG,

I am Sunny HO and a plastics supplier in Hong Kong since 1990. I got many inquiries from customers about using biodegradable plastics to replace petroleum based palstics in the recent days. I believe that using biodegradable plastics will be a trend in the near future.

Glad to browse your site and learn that you are having rich experience in this material. Please kindly instruct :-

    1. How do you think the future market of biodegradable plastics ? I don’t think it is an easy road since the sense of environemnt protection is still weak in Asia, especially in China. Checked the PLA price from Japan and found that even HB grade is being sold nearly Y500.00/Kg. While even PC is being sold below US$3,000.00/MT in Asia market, how its skyhigh price can be accepted by molder widely ? With regret that using biodegaradable plastics is not legislated yet, even in Europe and Japan.
    2. I want to develop Natural Fiber (Kenaf) reinforced FR-PP compounds with a company in Netherlands. But the base color of this modified PP only can be brown and it is also highly inflammable. I worry its limited application caused by base color and high FR additive cost can’t compete with the conventional FR plastics. Do you have any idea ?
    3. One of my customers is asking me to introduce gel type biodegradable plastics to them for a specific beach toy – to concrete . By judging the high cost of gel type BDP, I want to suggest them to use common starch paste to instead. Do you think it is feasible ?
    4. Even though China is world factory. But with regret that most businessmen are using their time for quick money and have no interest in the development of innovative material. Have you interest in working with us for mutual benefits ?

Please give comments by returning email.

Have a nice day and best regards.

    Sunny HO.
